Workshop update: Light, shadow, edges--creating a beautiful painting in pastel

Last week, I had the supreme privilege of teaching a two day workshop at the home of a gracious and generous student.  Why was it a supreme privilege?  First of all, the students were enthusiastic and eager to learn and absorb the fundamentals of design and composing a painting using the most challenging of subjects...the still life, florals, and architecture in natural light.

 

Second, the setting was like painting on the grounds of a lovely Tuscan villa.

 

Third,  a morning demonstration and discussion, was followed by a gourmet lunch, prepared by our host.

Forth, it was gratifying to see the progress the students made on their pastel paintings.

 

Finally, to say that I am overwhelmed by this feedback is an understatement:

There are very few people in your category.  Most artists do not have 1/100th the social gifts that you do.  You have a way of elevating each individual that you talk to.  You give them strength and confidence.  You draw out their highest potential.  These are the most important attributes of a fantastic teacher.  Add to that your incredible talent as an artist and your ability to make everyone feel better about a difficult assignment.  I hope that you receive back 10 times what you give to others.  I have been lifted and touched by your presence.  Thank you for granting me the honor of holding the workshop.
